Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs. His bed was next to the room’s only window.
The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked For hours on end. They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation. And every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.
The man in the other bed began to live for those one-hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside. The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young couples walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color of the rainbow. Grand old trees graced the landscape, and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.
As the man by the window described all this in exquisite detail, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the picturesque scene. One warm afternoon the man by the window described a parade passing by.
Although the other man couldn’t hear the band , he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words. Then unexpectedly, a sinister thought entered his mind. Why should the other man alone experience all the pleasures of seeing everything while he himself never got to see anything? It didn’t seem fair.
At first thought the man felt ashamed. But as the days passed and he missed seeing more sights, his envy eroded into resentment and soon turned him sour. He began to brood and he found himself unable to sleep. He should be by that window – that thought, and only that thought now controlled his life.
Late one night as he lay staring at the ceiling, the man by the window began to cough. He was choking on the fluid in his lungs. The other man watched in the dimly lit room as the struggling man by the window groped for the button to call for help. Listening from across the room he never moved, never pushed his own button which would have brought the nurse running in. In less than five minutes the coughing and choking stopped along with that the sound of breathing. Now there was only silence–deathly silence.
The following morning the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths. When she found the lifeless body of the man by the window, she was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take it away. As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the world outside. Finally, he would have the joy of seeing it all himself. He strained to slowly turn To look out the window beside the bed. It faced a blank wall.
The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased room mate had described such wonderful things outside this window. The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall. She said, “Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.”
Several months after counterfeit Avastin prompted fresh concern over the weaknesses in the pharmaceutical supply chain, a Tennessee cancer doctor has pleaded guilty to purchasing illegal foreign drugs. The physician, William Kincaid, who signed a plea agreement last week, is among the first to face charges in the probe, The Wall Street Journal writes. The investigation, which began last year, intensified this past February when more than a dozen medical practices were found to have purchased counterfeit Avastin – with cornstarch but without an active ingredient – from foreign distributors, in particular, an Internet pharmacy called Canada Drugs and another company, the paper writes. So far 155 medical practices in 33 states have received warnings from the FDA saying they bought unapproved drugs. Kris Thorkelson, the Canada Drugs ceo, did not respond to requests for comment from the paper. Canada Drugs execs previously maintained they comply with laws in countries where they operate and their website, Canadadrugs.com, has never sold Avastin. Two doctors who purchased drugs from a second distributor, and its owner, have already pleaded guilty to drug-importation crimes as part of the Avastin probe, and several companies owned by Canada Drugs are under investigation, the Journal writes, citing law enforcement sources. More doctors are expected to be charged in coming weeks, the paper adds. The guilty pleas highlight underlying economic issues that drove some physicians to purchase counterfeit medicines, notably a change in Medicare pricing in 2005 that lowered margins for administering expensive cancer medicines. And so counterfeits became much more attractive when discounts are offered (back story). To underscore the temptation, Kincaid and his office manager concealed purchases from nurses at his clinic who had earlier raised concerns about buying overseas drugs, according to court documents. The drugs were shipped the drugs to a self-storage facility co-owned by Kincaid and his employees would retrieve the drugs and mix these with legitimate medications in stock. In this case, Kincaid purchased not only counterfeit Avastin, but also fake Herceptin, Rituxan, Alimta, Gemzar, Taxotere and Abraxane for his clinic, according to court documents. In all, he purchased approximately $2 million worth of phony drugs and billed $2.5 million to federal and state government healthcare programs (read court document here). The labeling for Rituxan, for instance, indicated that the product came from an unregistered business in Switzerland that did not provide the FDA with a list of drugs that were made there and was distributed by another company located in New Delhi, India, after being manufactured there, court documents say. Kincaid, by the way, could face up to three years in jail if his plea is accepted. He acknowledged earning $500,000 profit by billing insurers for the full list price for $2 million in discounted foreign drugs, the filings say.
Bevacizumab (trade name Avastin, Genentech/Roche) is an angiogenesis inhibitor, a drug that slows the growth of new blood vessels. It is licensed to treat various cancers, including colorectal, lung, breast (outside the USA), glioblastoma (USA only), kidney and ovarian. Bevacizumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody that inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A). VEGF-A is a chemical signal that stimulates angiogenesis in a variety of diseases, especially in cancer. Bevacizumab was the first clinically available angiogenesis inhibitor in the United States.[citation needed] Bevacizumab was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for certain metastatic cancers. It received its first approval in 2004, for combination use with standard chemotherapy for metastatic colon cancer. It has since been approved for use in certain lung cancers, renal cancers, and glioblastoma multiforme of the brain. At one point bevacizumab was approved for breast cancer by the FDA, but the approval was revoked on 18 November 2011.The approval for breast cancer was revoked because, although there was evidence that it slowed progression of metastatic breast cancer, there was no evidence that it extended life or improved quality of life, and it caused adverse effects including severe high blood pressure and hemorrhaging. In 2008, the FDA gave bevacizumab provisional approval for metastatic breast cancer, subject to further studies. The FDA's advisory panel had recommended against approval.[5] In July 2010, after new studies failed to show a significant benefit, the FDA's advisory panel recommended against the indication for advanced breast cancer. Genentech requested a hearing, which was granted in June 2011. The FDA ruled to withdraw the breast cancer indication in November 2011. FDA approval is required for Genentech to market a drug for that indication. Doctors may sometimes prescribe it for that indication, although insurance companies are less likely to pay for it. The drug remains approved for breast cancer use in other countries including Australia. Clinical trials are underway for many other indications including ovarian cancer, pediatric osteosarcoma, and certain non-malignant eye diseases. In the curative setting (adjuvant therapy), clinical studies are underway in breast cancer and lung cancer. ...
it sounds expensive, just from that description...
Simple Answer: Asshole Rich People in the Senate and the House who NEVER went Hungry. We need some Poor Congressmen and Senators. The GOV should pay the expenses to run for these offices.
ROBERT – We're down to the final day to make a difference. Already, we've seen generous people from coast to coast pitch in to help hungry seniors. Thanks to generous donors, we have met our goal of $50,000, but there is still more to do to prevent hunger for older Americans this winter! I know that you care about helping older Americans live their best lives – that's why you're part of this community. And I know that if there was a moment where you could make a big difference in this fight, you wouldn't want to miss it. ROBERT, that moment is now. Check out my message from Monday and then
Thanks in advance – and happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours. – Jo Ann
I actually use this product all the time...my cat likes to play fetch, and, the little red 5-HOUR-ENERGY bottle caps are particularly suitable for the cat to run and fetch back... the link is to usatoday.com, author is J.C. Reindl, dated 20 November 2012...
- The maker of 5-Hour Energy, already facing questions about the safety of its caffeinated energy shots, is fighting to stop what it claims is an extensive counterfeiting operation. The Farmington Hills-based company, Living Essentials, said in a statement this week and court filings that it recently identified and shut down the counterfeiters' alleged factory in San Diego and obtained court orders to seize tens of thousands of illegal and fraudulent 5-Hour Energy bottles and machinery used to produce them. The counterfeit bottles were similar in appearance to authentic 5-Hour Energy shots, but slightly shorter and without a raised "pimple" mark in the center of each bottle cap. Dissatisfied customers have complained the counterfeits "did not provide any energy," according to a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in New York. Among more than two dozen defendants are three Michigan-based corporations. None would comment Tuesday when contacted by the Detroit Free Press. The counterfeits also tasted and smelled differently and contained no vitamin B12. Real 5-Hour Energy, sold in 1.93-ounce bottles, claims to contain 833 percent of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's recommended daily intake of B12. In addition, the bottles' trademark "running man" is heavier-set on the fake 5-Hour Energy labels. Living Essentials says it is unaware of any serious adverse reactions to the counterfeit product. The company is not attributing the counterfeits to last week's disclosure about the FDA's ongoing investigation of 92 reports of adverse reactions to 5-Hour Energy shots since 2009, including 13 deaths and 33 hospitalizations. The filing of an FDA report does not necessarily mean that the product in question caused the bad reactions. "We have asked the authorities, including law enforcement, to investigate and bring to justice anyone involved in knowingly producing, distributing and selling counterfeit 5-Hour Energy," Living Essentials spokeswoman Elaine Lutz said in a statement. 5-Hour Energy is owned by Farmington Hills billionaire Manoj Bhargava. The company has annual sales of more than $1 billion and sells about 9 million bottles of the energy shot a week in North America. Production occurs at two facilities in Wabash, Ind. The company received permission from judges in New York and San Francisco to seize counterfeit products and business records. The law firm representing the company, Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler of New York, identified three "kingpins of the conspiracy" in court documents. The three conspirators are purportedly relatives. Two of them, Walid Jamil and Justin Shayota, are identified as principals of Midwest Wholesale Distributors. Living Essentials is seeking $25 million in damages and all profits obtained through the alleged counterfeit scheme The lawsuit also names the Capital Sales Co. of Hazel Park and Universal Wholesale Inc. of Southfield as defendants. Representatives at both companies declined to comment.
anyways.......got a new laptop so i can be back online.........been having some weird dreams lately......probably all the doomsday hype.
i was thinking during this time so what if...........
there is a nwo and "they" need to create some sort of global disaster type situation that serves 2 purposes...... 1- eliminate a bunch of people (lower pop) 2- gain trust of survivors in order to establish this nwo
so....what if the fema camps are real but there to take refugees from said disaster/disasters??
what if haarp is a weapon capable of creating an earthquake of biblical proportion???
what will the fundies think when jesus doesnt come after said disaster/disasters and lose faith???
will the survivors be so grateful to this nwo that they will follow them?????
or.......what if the nwo has known of an impending disaster but didnt tell us????? same scenario of aftermath????
what if haarp is a mind control thingy and thats why so many people have a feeling of doom???? what if these dreams are being planted by someone????
anyway.......im nuts so im just rambling here.
and im damn glad to be back online anyway :) even if windows 8 sucks ass.
another way to consider the immanence of the eschaton...
Benedict. Divide and conquor? What's the meaning of the Popes's recent (2010) Apostolic Constitution inviting the Anglican Church (and hence the Episcopalians) to come in from the cold of the Reformation? Is it a gesture of reconciliation or a political tactic to destroy the Church of England? Whatever it is, it's very serious and has profound implications for both The Church and for the most elite order of the Protestant communions. Basically what Benedict has offered is inclusion within Roman Catholicism of any Anglican, including priests, who accept the offer. It has the feel of 'gathering the flocks' for end times' about it. And that it comes from the former head of the Inquisition adds to its profundity. I don't even see any requirement for Confession in order for the strays to become regathered within the fold. Just a simple 'yea or nay' will suffice. Is this a continuation John 23rd's ecumenism or is it something else?
Certainly the Constitution will have the immediate effect of dividing the Episcopal. In recent years the CoE has allowed women and gay priests, taken anti-state political positions, liberalized the liturgy and adopted political correctness as its new creed. The question in my mind is whether inclusion within Roman Catholicism will change nature of The Church or change the Reformation. The Pope is certainly aware of this conundrum and yet has committed himself to making the offer nonetheless- and in no small way- but in the highest possible method- an Apostolic Constitution.
Ecumenical or divisive? Big question. Does Benedict know something we don't know? Is he contemplating the prophecies of St. Malachi? I've wondered about this from the very moment he chose his papal name. The Olivine. Next to last.
