It was precisely when I was taken to the edge of the abyss and found myself suddenly free falling into a dark bottomless pit, that my descent was not met with imminent death, but rather, with eternal life, as I was lifted by an invisible force thru the darkness back into the light of divine union with source.
So my story begins, like most of us who are on this path of searching for our lost true essence, that I found myself 18 years ago on the brink of ending my life. I had been married for 8 straight years, it was a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week affair. He was my lover, business partner and best friend and vice-versa. So what happened? We had just invested all our life savings into a business venture that went south and had just lost everything. I remember saying to him, “We just lost everything, but at least we still have each other...”
On that evening as we returned home, in a state of utter shock and hopelessness, my husband decided that he wanted to go out, to wash away his woes. To say it lightly, “partying” was not on my “to do list” for the evening. That night, I couldnʼt sleep. I knew something was wrong, terribly wrong. He opened the front door of our apartment at 7:00am. “What happened?” I said. “I met someone...” he replied. The shaky floor I had been wearily standing on (due to a sleepless night) suddenly cracked open and I fell in, way in.
Within the next few days, my world suddenly seemed like an overcast, God-forsaken landscape with tumbleweeds rolling by. I was left from one day to another, with no income, no visible prospects for the future, and without the love of my life. I desperately needed a hug. I couldnʼt sleep or eat. The night my husband removed his last belonging, I found myself weeping alone on the floor of my vacant love nest. I remember that after a few hours, I decided that I didnʼt want to be “here” anymore. If this was what this life was about, if the individual that I loved the most in this world could one day to the next,
abandon me completely and direct his love and affection to someone else, then I wanted to leave.
It suddenly dawned on me, to simply stop breathing. I wasnʼt thinking, I just wanted to stop the pain of living. So, I took one last breath and stopped breathing. In that moment of quite desperation, I felt something in the darkness, suddenly grab both of my wrists and lift me to my feet from the floor. And from having felt completely suicidal and utterly alone, in one moment, I instantly felt, completely ecstatic, euphoric and connected in bliss to all that is, in the next.
This extraordinary spontaneous experience was totally foreign to me. If I couldnʼt see it, hear it or feel it, it didnʼt exist. I thought I was loosing my mind. I knew I was loosing my mind. So I got on the phone and started calling everyone I knew to find a therapist nearby that could see me ASAP. I finally got the name of a woman who specialized in spiritual psychology. At the time, although I had studied psychology at NYU, I didnʼt know what “spiritual psychology” was, but since I was feeling so desperate, I booked an appointment for the next day.
When I walked into her office the following morning, I noticed that the therapist looked at me in awe. She said that sheʼd seen hundreds of clients in her life, but had never seen someone with so much “assistance”. I asked her what she meant by “assistance”. She shared that she was also a medium and could “see” peopleʼs angels. Wow! That was “out there” to say the least, but since I had just had that surreal experience, I wanted to know more. She shared that everyone has angelic guides and that most people have one or two. Apparently, I had a flock of angels with me. So, I told her about what had happened to me the night before and if she thought it might have been my guides.
She said, “Why donʼt we ask them?” At the time, I didnʼt know that you could actually have a conversation with your “guides”. So she had me sit down and relax and she pulled out a sheet of paper and asked if it had been them that lifted me. In very large and scribbled handwriting, she wrote, “Yes.” Then she asked me if Iʼd like to hear any more messages from them. I said, “Yes.” So she wrote, “This is not your time yet. You still have not completed your mission.”
A few days later, I made an appointment with another intuitive to get more clarity about what my “mission” might be. During the reading, the seer told me that a friend would invite me to go on a trip. “You have to go,” she said. She continued, “This trip and who you will meet there, will mark the beginning of your spiritual path and shed light on your purpose.”
When I got to Santa Fe the following week, and met with my friend, he told me that he was going to hear a Mexican shaman speak about “Awakening From the Dream”. He said that this shaman was amazing and that I should come meet him. It turned out that the shaman from Mexico was spiritual teacher and author Don Miguel Ruiz of “The Four Agreements”, (Amber Allen 1997). The year was 1994.
So commenced my shamanic apprenticeship with Don Miguel Ruiz to awaken from this dream of slumber. During the years I spent as an apprentice of the Toltec silent knowledge, just looking into Don Miguel’s eyes, shifted me into an altered state of awareness where I felt “one” with all that is. Back in ancient times, the shaman or sage would sit with the tribe and impart what the Toltecs refer to as “silent knowledge”; it’s wisdom beyond words. It’s knowledge that is energetically passed from soul to soul. This kind of knowledge is beyond the understanding of the mind, it’s a knowing that is felt rather than thought.
It is said, “The eyes are the road to the soul.” When we “gaze” into each other’s eyes, we connect beyond the fear-based ego into the eternity of the other’s soul. We are then able to enter a sacred realm: the infinite oneness. This is why I shot the film in extreme close-up format; to give the viewer the opportunity to merge with the soul of the sage. I also interlaced these sacred moments of union with aerial shots of nature and world music to simulate soul flight and offer space for contemplation.
In time, I developed the ability to communicate with my own spirit guides and higher-self directly and understood that my “mission” is also my passion. My passion is delving into the human spirit and sharing the experience of oneness via diverse forms of media. However, it was not until the passing of my mother in 2003 that I found the courage and resources to finally begin production of “Awaken, Soul to Soul”. My mother had been a psychoanalyst and her profound love and deep desire to uplift others inspired me to do the same. I realized how short one lifetime is and felt a sudden urgency to complete what I signed up for.
When I began filming the interviews 6 years ago with the sages, I had no idea that the “crises” the sages were talking about would have such global and personal ramifications during 2012, the year of release and thrust of the film. I feel that the wisdom imparted by the sages in “Awaken, Soul to Soul” brings forth the soul’s perspective about why a crisis is necessary for our personal evolution and planetary awakening. Ultimately, a crisis is an initiation to help one purge past the ego back to one’s divine essence. With “Awaken, Soul to Soul”, I wanted to give the viewer the opportunity to know the oneness, not as a mental concept, but as a direct experience; thus offering the media of film as a tool for activating and awakening consciousness.
FILMMAKER
Argentinian born filmmaker Danisa Perry graduated from NYU with a BA in Psychology with a minor in Film. She went on to study Film Criticism at the graduate program at NYU for another year.
Later, she attended the graduate program at the University of Santa Monica where she studied Spiritual Psychology. The filmmaker then received more training in Film Production at the UCLA graduate extension program.
