During an appearance on MSNBC’s The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, Bob Costas attempted to prop up his ludicrous claim that young men can’t own guns “without something bad happening,” by asserting that athletes have never used a gun in a positive context, a claim which is easily debunked. . NBC Sports broadcaster Costas stoked widespread controversy on Sunday night when he attempted to turn the tragic murder-suicide involving Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher and his girlfriend Kasandra Perkins into an argument for gun control. . Costas told O’Donnell that he was in favor of “more comprehensive gun control legislation” and tried to argue the point by commenting that 65 out of 80 Colts players admitted to owning guns. . “Even if all those guns were obtained legally, you can’t have 65 guys in their 20′s and 30′s, aggressive young men subject to impulses, without something bad happening,” said Costas. . “Give me one example of a professional athlete who by virtue of his having a gun took a dangerous situation and turned it around for the better – I can’t think of a single one – but sadly I can think of dozens where by virtue of having a gun a professional athlete has wound up in a tragic situation,” he added. . Costas failed to name any of the “dozens” of such incidents he claimed proved his point, but we were able to dig up examples of athletes using a gun for self-defense or to stop a crime taking place. . Costas couldn’t name one, and yet we were able to come up with a couple just from a quick Google search, as well as other examples where athletes would have survived attacks and murders had they been able to defend themselves. . - In 2005, Baltimore Ravens cornerback Corey Fuller used his .38-caliber revolver to fire at and chase away a gunman who had entered his home in an attempted robbery. . - Also in 2005, Houston Astros outfielder Luke Scott prevented a potentially violent situation in Houston involving a man asking him for money by displaying his gun. . - As this Fox News article explains, football players are routinely targeted by criminals and armed thieves, giving them all the more reason to be armed in order to protect their families. . - In 2007, Washington Redskins’ Sean Taylor was shot dead trying to protect his family after gunmen burst into his Miami home. “Some wonder if he’d be alive today if he’d had a gun nearby to protect himself that night,” reports Vibe. . Statist host Lawrence O’Donnell then attempted to refute a point made by many in the aftermath of Costas’ comments – that Jovan Belcher could just as easily have strangled or stabbed his wife to death and that he is to blame and not the gun, which is an inanimate object. . “How many home runs could Babe Ruth hit without a bat,” asks O’Donnell, believing that a comparison between a sports game where only a baseball bat is allowed and real life, where any object can be used to kill a person, is somehow applicable or makes sense in any way – when it clearly doesn’t. . Julia Gillard has recorded a tongue-in-cheek video address to the nation warning the world is about to come to an apocalyptic end, as predicted in the Mayan calendar.In the 55-second spoof clip, recorded for Triple J radio, Ms Gillard addresses her "remaining fellow Australians" warning of zombies, hell beasts and a K-pop armageddon. With an emotionless delivery, the prime minister says the end of the world is coming not because of Y2K, or even the carbon tax, but "it turns out the Mayan calendar was true". "Whether the final blow comes from flesh-eating zombies, demonic hell beasts or from the total triumph of K-pop, if you know one thing about me it is this: I will always fight for you until the very end," Ms Gillard says. "And at least this means I won't have to do Q&A again." The message was recorded to promote Tom and Alex's "End of the World" radio show, which is set to air at 6am AEDT on Friday morning.In an interview with ninemsn, Tom Ballard joked the message was "not scripted" and that Ms Gillard was "panicked and worried" at Triple J's prediction of a doomsday coinciding with their Friday morning radio show. "Knowing us and knowing our ratings, she knew we would flog the video to death so we kept our end of the bargain," he said. The radio pair would not reveal how they coaxed the prime minister into making the video or whether there was anything she would not say. "Hypothetically, if this was a scripted video, the Prime Minister would have changed a few things to add some of her own jokes into the script," Ballard told ninemsn. The USS Eisenhower, an American aircraft carrier that holds eight fighter bomber squadrons and 8,000 men, arrived at the Syrian coast yesterday in the midst of a heavy storm, indicating US preparation for a potential ground intervention.While the Obama administration has not announced any sort of American-led military intervention in the war-torn country, the US is now ready to launch such action "within days" if Syrian President Bashar al-Assad decides to use chemical weapons against the opposition, the Times reports.Some have suggested that the Assad regime may use chemical weapons against the opposition fighters in the coming days or weeks.The arrival of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, one of the 11 US Navy aircraft carriers that has the capacity to hold thousands of men, is now stationed at the coast of Syria, DEBKAfile reports. The aircraft carrier joined the USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group, which holds about 2,500 Marines."We have (US) special operations forces at the right posture, they don't have to be sent," an unnamed US official told The Australian, which suggested that US military troops are already near Syria and ready to intervene in the conflict, if necessary.If the US decides to intervene militarily in Syria, it now has at its disposal 10,000 fighting men, 17 warships, 70 fighter-bombers, 10 destroyers and frigates and a guided military cruises. Some of the vessels are also equipped with Aegis missile interceptors to shoot down any missiles Syria might have at hand, according to DEBKAfile."The muscle is already there to be flexed," a US official told the London Times about the US military's presence outside of Syria. "It's premature to say what could happen if a decision is made to intervene. That hasn't taken shape, we've not reached that kind of decision. There are a lot of options, but it [military action] could be launched rapidly, within days."The move comes after NATO made a significant strategic decision Tuesday to deploy Patriot Air and Missile Defense Systems in Turkey on the border of Syria where opposition groups have the stronghold. The defense would be able to protect Turkey from potential Syrian missiles that could contain chemical weapons, as well as intimidate Syrian Air Force pilots from bombing the northern Syria border towns, which the armed rebels control. Four people have been killed and some 350 injured as supporters and opponents of Egyptian president clashed in Cairo. Launched on September 10, 2011, the Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission will create the most accurate gravitational map of the Moon to date, improving our knowledge of near-side gravity by 100 times and of far-side gravity by 1000 times. The high-resolution gravitational field, especially when combined with a comparable-resolution topographical field, will enable scientists to deduce the Moon's interior structure and composition, and to gain insights into its thermal evolution--that is, the history of the Moon's heating and cooling, which opens the door to understanding its origin and development. Accurate knowledge of the gravity will also be an invaluable navigational aid to future lunar spacecraft. Ultimately, the information contributed by the GRAIL mission will increase our knowledge of how Earth and its rocky neighbors in the inner solar system developed into the diverse worlds we see today. In the course of the mission, GRAIL will conduct two important firsts. This will be the first time any space agency has attempted the complex set of maneuvers required to place two robotic spacecraft into the same precise orbit around a planetary body other than Earth so that they can fly in formation.
