That information came while in the hospital and needing to have a liter of cancer-laden fluid drained from an almost fully collapsed lung. To say that my family and  I are sad would be an understatement. But I am also angry at doctors who never told her the truth, at a health care system based on profit first and patient at some point, and at a fundamental disregard and denial of the inevitability of death for everyone. The last point is the driving force of so much that is wrong with this picture for our family and for the majority of Americans. Disregard of the body and its needs or the wanton denial of the inevitable results when those needs are not met make America the most diseased nation on the planet. Privatization has made that fact a huge and lucrative business. Truth does not serve that thriving business, denial does. Upon diagnosis 3 years ago, my sister should have been told, “Miss, we are sorry to tell you that statistically women who contract breast cancer before the age of 50 live less than 5-7 years from diagnosis regardless of what medical intervention is done.” If my sister had heard that from her oncologist, she might have made changes in her lifestyle to support quality of life and health for the time she has left with her beloved husband. She might have chosen not to be a lab rat in the latest chemotherapy test and trial that ripped at her body horribly. And if truth were what was motivating the doctors and clinicians she would not have been encouraged to extract eggs from a womb that would never have children. My sister was led down a primrose path of future rosy possibilities of cancer-free motherhood, thousands of dollars were basically stolen from her and her husband for the procedure, and no one in the system said a word. Lie after lie, denial after denial, profiteering and unethical behavior all supported my baby sister in her demise. And the icing on the cake is that even with cancer in her lungs, it was me that had to tell her and our mother the truth. The doctors and medical system are not to blame for her contracting cancer but they are responsible for their actions, lack of action, and for an overall lack of ethics and honesty. We all will die. That is as sure and sure can be. My meditative practice and belief system do not give me the luxury of delusion but instead provide understanding as to why human beings create the fabrications and troubles that we do. Meditation and the understandings of interdependence and impermanence support me in times of like this. My anger does not dissolve but is held within a wave of compassion for my sister and family, for a system that is creating more suffering than care, and the karmic greed and denial that fuels it. Meditation helps me hold it all in light, light that I trust will eventually bring truth, wisdom, and compassion to those who suffer and and those there to help. 修改訂閱 | 取消訂閱
