Teas for Digestive Issues

One way you can soothe and improve a troubled digestive tract is by drinking some tea.  Tea’s first benefit is that it helps to water down your stomach acid a bit, which can help with acid reflux and many of the unpleasant churning sensations associated with indigestion.  The herbs in tea also can go a long way toward calming down your digestive system and reducing inflammation.  Here are several different teas you can try the next time you’re feeling less than fantastic:

  • Ginger tea.  This is one of the most powerful types of tea out there for soothing indigestion.  You can purchase ginger tea in a store, or you can make it yourself using fresh ginger root.  Ginger root stores well for many months and you only need a tiny bit to steep an effective tea.  You can slice or mash it up, put it in a tea ball, and let it step in boiling water.  Add honey if you like to enhance the flavor.

  • Chamomile tea.  Many of usare familiar with the soothing effect of Chamomile.  This is one of the most effective remedies for indigestion and is even effective for sleeplessness and anxiety.  Chamomile is an ingredient in many herbal supplements which are available for diverticulitis and IBS.  It can reduce inflammation and muscle spasms, which can alleviate cramping.  You’ll find chamomile tea for sale in most grocery stores; it tastes great by itself or with honey added.

  • Peppermint tea.  Peppermint leaves are another herb which is useful in digestion.  Peppermint is great for moving gas through your system and settling your insides down.  This is another type of tea which you can easily purchase at a grocery store.

  • Oolong tea.  This is a mild type of tea from China which has an alkalizing effect.  It can reduce stomach acidity, helping with acid reflux, and it’s also great for people with ulcers.  Oolong tea helps to boost your metabolism, which can also help move food along through your digestive tract, making digestion easier.  This tea is great to drink regularly for long term improvements.

  • Green tea.  This type of tea contains a compound called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a type of polyphenol catechin.  EGCG can help to reduce inflammation in the digestive system.  Drinking green tea regularly can have a positive overall effect on your digestive system which develops over time and has even been found effective against cancer.

  • Spearmint tea. Spearmint tea has been known historically for helping relieve congestion and to relax the esophagus. Spearmint tea can be used to remedy motion sickness and to relieve stomach pain. Spearmint tea also as has been studied and shown effective in being able to help women with excessive hair growth in unwanted places and useful to drink if experiencing PCOS.

  • Kombucha. Though kombucha in itself is not a tea, it IS made from tea. It can be made from green and black tea as well as other herbal teas. It can be bought or you can acquire a starter culture (called a ‘scoby’) yourself and brew your own at home. The benefits of kombucha are quite a few but the primary is the probiotic activity and enzymes provided the gut. It has also been found to promote liver function, optimize metabolism, and relieve congestion and to increase overall vitality.

Another option is to regularly take a supplement like IBS Support Botanicals and Healthy Bowel Support, which includes a plethora of helpful herbs specifically blended to help prevent and treat the symptoms of indigestion and restore the gut to balance.  Herbal teas and supplements can be used in conjunction with each other for even greater effectiveness (as with anything else, just don’t overdo it).  Natural remedies like these are among the healthiest ways you can treat digestive disorders.  Herbs like chamomile, peppermint, ginger, spearmint and kombucha have numerous other health benefits which extend beyond the benefits to the digestive system, making them even more helpful.  They can boost your immune system, prevent cancer, reduce arthritis pain, and more.
