In the most strident warning over gun control to President Obama yet, the Utah Sheriffs' Association is pledging to go to war over any administration plan to take guns away, even if it means losing their lives.
Calling the Second Amendment a sacred right of citizens to protect themselves from "tyrannical subjugation," the association state elected sheriffs said in a new letter, "we are prepared to trade our lives for the preservation of its traditional interpretation."
Theirs is the first meaningful proof that some in law enforcement and the military are preparing to fight federal forces if the president wins his goal of sweeping gun control.
In a direct warning to Obama, the FBI and other agencies, the sheriffs wrote: "Make no mistake, as the duly-elected sheriffs our our respective counties, we will enforce the rights guaranteed to our citizens by the Constitution. No federal official will be permitted to descend upon our constituents and take from them what the Bill of Rights--in particular Amendment II--has given them."
(WICHITA, Kan.)— Wichita police say they know who their suspects are in the theft of marijuana from the department’s property and evidence facility.
An evidence clerk found three bags of marijuana had been torn open and some of the drug was missing. The marijuana, from a 2009 case, was being held as evidence at the facility near 3rd and Waco.
Police believe mice chewed through the bags to eat and use the marijuana as nesting material. No word yet on whether the mice have been found. Wichita Police spokesman Lt. Doug Nolte says they do have contracts with exterminators to handle the situation.

While the divers were observing manta rays, they were approached by a bottlenose dolphin. Luckily for all of us, they captured the encounter on video and uploaded it to YouTube. Keller Laros, one of the divers, heard an unusual squeal from the dolphin. Laros realized the dolphin was in distress; a fishing line was wrapped around its pectoral fin. He described how he tried to remove the fishing line: "I was trying to unwrap it, I got the fishing hook out of the pectoral fin. ... I was worried if I tugged on it, it might hurt him more."
The amazing part of the video is how cooperative and gentle the dolphin is as the divers help him. Laros was able to get the hook out and snip the fishing line near the dolphin's mouth.
"The way he came right up and pushed himself into me, there was no question this dolphin was there for help," Laros said. Several YouTube commenters have praised Laros and his team for their effort.
It should also be noted that at the beginning of the video, there is a disclaimer that reads, in part: "We do not advocate attempts by laypersons to rescue marine life. The assistance provided to this dolphin was given by professional divers with thousands of hours of experience at this dive site. It was an unusual event. The compassion extended to this animal by the divers is something we should aspire to do, not criticize."
So far, the rescue has been viewed more than 466,000 times on YouTube. People are in awe of what the divers captured on film and what they were able to do.

"He lived life to the fullest," his father said. "Baltimore Bob: Did he ger his Cocked Sucked as that is Living Life to the Fullest."
But that life came to a tragic end on Wednesday after Hartford, 22, a senior from Stroudsburg, suffered a massive stroke following an apparent fall on campus nearly two weeks ago.
Hartford's body was found in a pool of blood on a concrete surface outside the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity house about 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 10, said his father, Thomas W. Hartford. He had been in intensive care at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
His son, he said, had attended a gathering for potential new members at the fraternity house on the evening of Jan. 9. After the event ended, he remained at the house, socializing with a small group of friends, the father said. His son was last seen at 12:45 a.m.
Hartford suffered multiple skull and facial fractures, severe brain trauma, a broken wrist and optical nerve damage, he said.
The doctor told him the injuries were consistent with a fall from about 15 to 20 feet, he said. University of Pennsylvania detectives who investigated told him they believe Hartford either fell from the window or had been locked out and was climbing up to get in the window.
Penn officials declined to release any information about the fall and issued a one-sentence statement.
"We are deeply saddened by Tom's tragic death, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very difficult time," said Stephen J. MacCarthy, vice president for university communications.
The fraternity also issued a statement, noting that Hartford was a former member.
"While he was no longer affiliated with the chapter, he remained close with many of the undergraduate members," said Brian Warren Jr., executive director. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends."
Hartford's father said his son had drinks that evening but was not intoxicated. A child support system investigator for Monroe County, he said he doesn't blame the university or anyone and has no plans to sue.
"They've been great to us," he said of the university. "It was just a tragic accident in my mind."
An avid soccer player and skier, Hartford was a well-liked, positive young man, majoring in cognitive science, his father said. Fifty fraternity brothers came to visit him at the hospital on Tuesday.
"They came to say goodbye," Hartford said.
The viewing will be at Clark Funeral Home in Stroudsburg on Friday. Services will be held Saturday at Reeders United Methodist Church where Hartford was a member of the youth group.

Lori Stodghill was 31-years old, seven-months pregnant with twin boys and feeling sick when she arrived at St. Thomas More hospital in Cañon City on New Year’s Day 2006. She was vomiting and short of breath and she passed out as she was being wheeled into an examination room. Medical staff tried to resuscitate her but, as became clear only later, a main artery feeding her lungs was clogged and the clog led to a massive heart attack. Stodghill’s obstetrician, Dr. Pelham Staples, who also happened to be the obstetrician on call for emergencies that night, never answered a page. His patient died at the hospital less than an hour after she arrived and her twins died in her womb. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Stodghill’s husband Jeremy, a prison guard, filed a wrongful-death lawsuit on behalf of himself and the couple’s then-two-year-old daughter Elizabeth. Staples should have made it to the hospital, his lawyers argued, or at least instructed the frantic emergency room staff to perform a caesarian-section. The procedure likely would not have saved the mother, a testifying expert said, but it may have saved the twins. The lead defendant in the case is Catholic Health Initiatives, the Englewood-based nonprofit that runs St. Thomas More Hospital as well as roughly 170 other health facilities in 17 states. Last year, the hospital chain reported national assets of $15 billion. The organization’s mission, according to its promotional literature, is to “nurture the healing ministry of the Church” and to be guided by “fidelity to the Gospel.” Toward those ends, Catholic Health facilities seek to follow the Ethical and Religious Directives of the Catholic Church authored by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Those rules have stirred controversy for decades, mainly for forbidding non-natural birth control and abortions. “Catholic health care ministry witnesses to the sanctity of life ‘from the moment of conception until death,’” the directives state. “The Church’s defense of life encompasses the unborn.” The directives can complicate business deals for Catholic Health, as they can for other Catholic health care providers, partly by spurring political resistance. In 2011, the Kentucky attorney general and governor nixed a plan in which Catholic Health sought to merge with and ultimately gain control of publicly funded hospitals in Louisville. The officials were reacting to citizen concerns that access to reproductive and end-of-life services would be curtailed. According to The Denver Post, similar fears slowed the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth’s plan over the last few years to buy out Exempla Lutheran Medical Center and Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in the Denver metro area. But when it came to mounting a defense in the Stodghill case, Catholic Health’s lawyers effectively turned the Church directives on their head. Catholic organizations have for decades fought to change federal and state laws that fail to protect “unborn persons,” and Catholic Health’s lawyers in this case had the chance to set precedent bolstering anti-abortion legal arguments. Instead, they are arguing state law protects doctors from liability concerning unborn fetuses on grounds that those fetuses are not persons with legal rights.
