A Still, Small Voice

Richard Eskow

From a tragic weekend, a return to the daily grind of politics. Our hearts may not be in it, but the challenge is undying and the struggle is one struggle: to preserve each other, and our humanity, in the face of relentless forces.

Still, the tragedy haunts. A friend of a friend is seen in a photograph as his little daughter looks up at him adoringly. That little girl died in Newtown last Friday. All across the country stories are told of teachers, a psychologist, and a principal who dedicated their lives to children.

Thinking the Unthinkable: On Mental Health, My Son, and Gun Violence

The Road to Guantánamo and Back

Frida Berrigan

Hard to believe it was seven years ago this week that 20 or so friends and I were fasting and vigiling outside of the U.S. naval base at Guantánamo Bay. It was a dusty and inauspicious place. Standing Strong Against the Furies

Jennifer Browdy de Hernandez

Just as people in places like the Maldives, Bangladesh and Pakistan may have shook their heads at the cluelessness of Americans who suddenly woke up to climate change when Sandy came to town, people living in hot spots of violence around the world now have every right to be shaking their heads at the collective American refusal to see and understand how, in the wake of the Newtown massacre, we are much to blame for our own misery.

US Stupidity in Syria: This Is No Fight Between Goodies and Baddies

Patrick Cockburn

It is one of the most horrifying videos of the war in Syria. It shows two men being beheaded by Syrian rebels, one of them by a child. He hacks with a machete at the neck of a middle-aged man who has been forced to lie in the street with his head on a concrete block. At the end of the film, a soldier, apparently from the Free Syrian Army, holds up the severed heads by their hair in triumph.Free Syrian Army fighter

Gaza Youth: Growing Up in 'The World's Largest Jail'

Peter Schurmann

SAN FRANCISCO – A series of drawings is spread across the table in front of Ayman Nijim. On the side is a wall smeared in red and brown.

Grappling with Phantoms: A Financial Cliff, a War on Christmas, and Other Dim Tidings of Political Disconnect

Phil Rockstroh

“All art is a kind of confession, more or less oblique. All artists, if they are to survive, are forced, at last, to tell the whole story; to vomit the anguish up.” ―James Baldwin

As we draw near to the Winter Solstice and the days shorten, one's thoughts are drawn inward.
